The Dark Guardian

I'm not sure when it happened...ok that's a lie. I know exactly when it happened and the exact circumstances around how it happened. The only thing that eluded me was why it happened. I will tell you exactly what happened.Your parents always you about traveling around late at night. It isn't safe they say, but when you're in a college town full of drunk students stumbling around at night and nothing seems to happen to them, there seems to be an overall lack of danger.
Time and time again found myself wandering the meandering paths of the campus late at night. The campus was mostly deserted, and there seemed to be a peace in the air. I loved the serenity and the privacy to enjoy nature all to myself. There were the occasional lamp posts that lighted the paths, but they were few and far between. Most of the paths were lined with trees and exceptionally dark.
There were rumors about strange incidents on campus, but none of them could be confirmed. There were no reports of theft or assault either, so I felt as though I was in the haven of safety.
That was not the case, on October 15th 2016. There happened to be another who was traveling the paths late at night besides myself. I noticed there presence, but I didn't care. I was absorbed in my own thoughts which swirled around me, imagining that I was in a far off place.
If I had been paying more attention, I might have noticed that this other person was not exactly what I thought he was. His gait was strange, and his posture was hunched. The most damning feature that should have alerted me to danger was the fearsome red eyes which glowed beneath his hood. However, I continued on towards him, oblivious to the threat.
As I passed by him, he grabbed my arm, and my face froze in horror as I finally got a good look at him. The red eyes were fearsome, but the worst was that he was little more than a skeleton. The bones were covered by hardly any flesh, and the little flesh it had was rotting. The clothes hung over its body.
My fear petrified me, and I found myself unable to scream.
"Fleshling, give me your life essence." The words reeked of rotten flesh and death.
I couldn't concentrate at all as the stench was overwhelming and my fear was paralyzing. My fight or flight instincts were completely eroded as I was merely the mouse staring into the eyes of a serpent: unable to move or react.
What happened next eroded my hold on reality. The skeleton pulled me close and started to drain the life out of me. It is difficult to describe what exactly was happening, but I could see an essence slipping away from me. It was like a river of fluorescent lights that sparkled and shone brightly.
The sight transfixed my mind and for a brief moment all I could see and feel was this warm and bright life force coming from my chest. The feeling didn't last long as my limbs started to go numb and cold. My instincts finally kicked in and I tried my best to push myself away from the skeleton, but it was to no avail. My strength was too far gone and I was completely in its grasp.
My struggles grew weaker and weaker, and my only hope was that someone might come by, but my reason for being out so late was to avoid such a thing from happening. Darkness closed in around my consciousness, and right before the lights went out another light burst forth from my chest.
This light was nothing like the light that had been emitted before. Whereas the light before was lively and benevolent, this new light was dark and malevolent. The light became smoke and soon the smoke coalesced into a form.
Hooded and mysterious, I could only watch as the new figure stood between me and the skeleton which was looking none too happy to be interrupted in sucking out my life. The fragile light that had been going into the skeleton, was now diverted to this new form. The more it took of this life force, the more solid it seemed to grow.
It was armored, and after becoming a solid form it turned on the skeleton. A dark blade appeared from the darkness and quickly dismantled the skeleton. The blow was deadly to both the skeleton and myself, because as it landed the both of us vanished from consciousness.
I awoke back in my dorm the next day almost as if nothing had happened at all, but that was the day that I assumed my dark spirit, a powerful, angry dark guardian spirit.
