No Room for Heroes

"Doctor, I think the world has had enough of your experiments." I walked casually around his laboratory plucking at different instruments and vials."My work is valuable to the entire world. What I have been doing here will be able to change the entire world."
"You have indeed began the process to change the world, but I cannot say that it has been changed particularly for the better. The things that have been coming out of here have been causing havoc all over the place. Some have been known to do amazing feats like stopping floods, rescuing people and saving humanity. However, others haven't been nearly as well behaved."
"I cannot be responsible for the actions of people. The gift that I provided for them was all they asked for. This world will become a better place once balance is restored. These people are just sorting themselves out."
"Well, there is no more time for them to be sorted out. You know why I am here."
"I have been wondering what took you so long to reach me."
"You don't make it easy to reach you when you have a mutant army blocking the way with everything from controlling fire, or causing tornadoes. It was a miracle that I made it this far."
"Well, now that you made it perhaps I can convince you to perhaps indulge in my research before you end me. I can give you something that you have only dreamed. Consider it, a man with you already extraordinary abilities augmented by my research. No human or mutant would ever be able to compare. You would be the best specimen."
There was an insane glow in the doctor's eyes. He stepped closer with a hand outstretched.
"Don't be ridiculous doctor. It is time to end this madness." I started tossing out grenades and watched the lab started to explode. Flames started to pop up everywhere as all of the crazy madman's place.
"You think that this is the end? Why would I bestow a gift upon all those strangers without giving myself a little taste." The doctor started to transform. His old and hunched form straightened into a younger version of himself.
"So you have found a way to reverse your aging. You should stay this way; it suits you much better." I didn't give the mutant a chance to make any more moves. My twin pistols were already firing while I was moving behind cover. Damn, I thought to myself as I realized that the bullets were having no effect. It was likely that it might be the case, but I had gotten lucky a few times to hit a few mutants that were not bulletproof. Time to switch to something with a bit more of a punch.
"Where are you hiding? You know they call you the reaper. There is no one that is more feared among our kind. Some even believe that you are one of us."
He was just trying to flush me out. It was time to see if he was immune to a few toxins. With my mask strapped in place, I tossed out a flash grenade and then tossed the toxic grenades to all corners of the room. My pistols were back firing and trying to distract him from the fact that the gas was being released.I flew backwards into a wall as the mad doctor turned super mutant smashed into me.
"I'm sure that must have hurt. Was that a few ribs I heard crack?"
The doctor loomed over me. It appeared that the gas was not effective at all.
"I am a bit disappointed. Bullets, gas and flash grenades are all you brought to this fight. You must have something else to show me."
"I do have something doctor." I reached out with a hand, and touched him. My purpose was to get close enough to him so that he would let his guard down. Darkness seeped into his body, paralyzing the doctor. The darkness kept spreading and the doctor was completely unable to move.
I hated having to use this when I worked. Why couldn't mutants just die like regular humans. The darkness stripped away my human appearance to reveal my more shadow like form that resided underneath.
"How is it that you are one of us, and no one has ever known. This is impossible. I know that you have never been to my lab nor have you received any of my treatment."
"Doctor, your mutants are very new, but they are still one thing. They were and still are human. I have existed before humans and I will exist long after them. What I don't like is mutants that are upsetting things here and trying to make life difficult for me and my kind. Yes, I am the ambassador to the humans and also work as the dark hand that is cleaning up this mutant problem. The first thing is to stop this issue at its source." My shadow hand reached out to the doctor once more, but before I could rip his heart out, his entire body just disappeared before my eyes.
It the next moment a streak reappeared. "Who are you?"
My eyes narrowed on the figure that was before me.
"Your time will come mutant, but interrupting me has hastened your demise."
"I can't let you kill him. I need the doctor."
"There does not need to be anymore mutants."
"And there won't be as long as he can create a cure."
"A cure," my laughed was full of open derision. A cure is costly and requires more time than anyone is willing to give. While you are off trying to find something that doesn't exist people are going to die."
"Mutants are people too and they should at least try to be saved."
"Too bad that you aren't going to be one of them." My wraith form descended on the mutant, but his speed was much too fast. He was already out of reach and then behind me. I had to quickly retreat into the darkness before he could actually reach me. His speed was far outpacing my ability and there was no way that I could touch him with my death touch. I needed to restrict his range of movement.
Items were being quickly rearranged in the room to prepare for the incoming whirlwind. However, it did not seem to slow or deter the mutant. I was quickly forced to return to the shadows, but this game was getting ridiculous. With a final lunge, I managed to just get a hand, but it was not enough. In the next instant I was flipping upside down.
The mutant was pressed down on top of me. He was considerably younger than I expected.
"Look, I'm not here to kill anyone, but I need the doctor. He is the only one that is able to figure out how to make a cure to reverse all of this. I can't sit by and watch mutants be killed. So please if you are the one that is killing them, just stop. Give me a bit of time to be able to convince the doctor to create a cure."
"Why waste your time looking for a cure when there already is one." The fool was close enough for death to reach him and he didn't even... He was gone before I could even move. I cursed the day and realized that this was not going to look good on my record. I failed to capture the doctor after all the time it took to reach him and I lost to a mutant. There was going to be a long line of dead mutants to make up for this disgrace. Whoever, this blazing fast hero of the mutants was, I was going to make sure that there would be no one left to save even if a cure was created.
